Alessandra and Stefania are two young Italian photographers who decided to make this beautiful series to answer to the question that everyone posses to them: ‘What is like to be twins?’. “So one day it came to our mind a different way to answer this question: taking pictures of ourselves in our daily lives, in order to understand through the eyes of the beholder what is like to be twins, or at least for us.”
am - First of all thank you very much for your contribution to our project. Can you please introduce yourself for us?
AP - We are Alessandra and Stefania Papagni, two 23 years old italian-french twins. We live in Italy, more precisely in Potenza. We have two very similar characters and the main traits of these are shyness, insecurity and nostalgia. Besides sharing the same DNA, we also share the passion for photography.
am - What inspires your work?
AP - We’re inspired by daily life and everything that belongs to it, the colors, the lights, scenes of some movies and songs.
am - After completing this project can you better tell “what is like to be twins”? What did you discover by making this series?
AP - With the realization of this project we put our tune even more in evidence, and you can see that because every action of our daily life is shared, from making breakfast to going to the bathroom, or just relaxing on a bench.
Through these shots we were able to understand the feeling of astonishment mixed with curiosity that people feel watching us always together.
am - Who are your favourite photographers / artists?
AP - We like to discover new artists but those that we follow are mainly Maud Chalard, Miriam Sitchinava, Tamara Lichtenstein and Lauren Withrow.
am - How would you describe your photographs in 3 words?
AP - Sincere, spontaneous and natural.
am - What are 5 things you could absolutely not live without?
AP - Cameras, notebook, smartphone, chips and TV series.
am - If you could travel and stay in a place for one year, where would you choose to go?
