Anne-Sophie is a young French photographer who creates both, delicate as well as sarcastic images that are always well composed and highly appealing. Photography is for Anne-Sophie a catharsis, a way to fight depression and anxiety, through it she finds her creative impulse, and she is not short in creativity as she draws, makes collages and curates online galleries.
Next we want to present the nice interview that we had with Anne-Sophie:
am - First of all thank you very much for your contribution to our project. Can you please introduce yourself for us?
ASL - I’m a 27 years old French woman based in Marseille; I was born in Toulon and have Corsican roots, where I got to spend a lot of time, which connects me to my roots. I graduated in economic law three years ago. Since then, I have not been able to work due to an overwhelming anxiety and chronic depressions. For this reason among others, photography is currently very present in my life.
am - How did you start in photography?
ASL - I have always been a creative child, words and images were very important to me. An early anxiety combined with a natural growing interest into visual arts led me to the ’imaginative path’. I made collages out of magazines, 3D crafts, I drew, and soon enough I discovered photography in a very random way. Disposable cameras during holidays : ) I was 15 or so. Then, I got into my first depressive episode and the camera became a medication, a way to cope with my problems.
am - What inspires your work?
ASL - What surrounds me, hence what is going on in my head. As a high sensitive person I am constantly connected to the surrounding environment and my senses are very acute. The weather, music, a relative, a happy or a lousy day, my dogs, fashion, images, everything is an inspiration – even in a non conscious way I would say. I also do curate galleries on Flickr which is very inspiring and rewarding on both human and artistic levels.
am - Who are your favourite photographers / artists?
ASL - Picasso, Nicolas de Staël, Roger Ballen, Boris Mikhailov, William Eggleston, Martin Parr, Nan Goldin, Doug Dubois, Guy Bourdin, Juergen Teller, Camille Vivier, Lise Sarfati, Ren Hang… there are so many ‘great’ artists.
am - How would you describe your photographs in 3 words?
ASL - Intuitive, feminine and raw :)
am - When you are not taking pictures, what do you do?
ASL - I watch movies, I cook, I walk my dogs, I connect with my friends and family. Music and words are also very important to me, and I love politics.
am - If you could travel and stay in a place for one year, where would you choose to go?
ASL - I would have told you Mexico for a stay; but for a year it is different. I guess any city in Italy. Corsican and Italian cultures are very similar, due to geography and historical matters. But it is obviously very different. Yes I can totally picture myself eating pastas, wandering into the beautiful museums and the sweet countryside, meeting Italian guys, dolce.
am - Favourite songs / bands at the moment?
ASL - Wilson Pickett - Land of 1000 dances each morning: that’s medication people; and everything written by Elliott Smith (that is not quite medication, but still…). Lately I am back to Morcheeba. Otherwise I’m in an weird regressive 90’s rap trip, so I get my freak on like Missy Elliot commands me to.
am - What’s your favourite movie?
ASL - ‘Goodfellas’, ‘Casino’, any good mob movies in general. Cause I am a badass (in my couch).
am - What are you reading at the moment?
ASL - I can’t get away from mindfulness therapy guides. It really helped me and still does. I have trouble reading fiction lately, don’t know why. Maybe because I already have a lot of stories going on in my head.
am - What’s your favourite season and why?
ASL - Summertime (could have quoted that song for sure). I need light, I need the sea, bright colors, childhood memories etc… Far ninety
am - Do you have any project in mind that could be a personal or professional challenge?
ASL - I am thinking about starting a project that would be more journalistic, but it is a secret :)
