Carolina is a Brazilian photographer who uses the medium as a way to see beyond the obvious, to explore what lies beneath the surface. In her series 'The desire to fall with eyes wide open', Carolina takes distance from the evident in order to encounter the essence of things and reveal the subtle worlds that are not apparent at first sight, inviting us to make an introspection and discover what matter to us.
First of all thank you very much for your contribution to our project. Can you please introduce yourself for us?
My name is Carolina Krieger, I live in Balneário Camboriú, SC, Brasil. I’m self taught. At the moment I’m dedicated to my personal photography projects and this year I’ll start an experimental photography and manual collage workshop project.
How did you start in photography?
Ever since my childhood, photography has been very present in my life. My family was fascinated by photography, my mother, aunt and uncle loved to photograph. I inherited all the photos from this time period, 70s and 80s. They are precious images. But in fact I started to photograph in 2010. At the time I worked with fashion and traveled to the country side of San Paulo to produce clothing pieces. In one of these trips I took a camera and started to photograph alone. I arrived in a place with lots of trees, and there I had the perception that the gesture of photography made it possible to experience a more subtle reality, as if entering another time. It was a very beautiful and significant moment. It was from this moment that I discovered photography as a form of vibrant expression. I then stopped working with fashion and started to dedicate myself to my personal photography and also commercial photography.
What is 'The desire to fall with eyes wide open’ about?
'The desire to fall with eyes wide open' is an essay about the perception of more subtle worlds.
The research that generated this essay comes from an experience of inadequacy. When suddenly the world order, the objective reality, the references of surfaces, all break loose, a sensation of oddity, of non-belonging that occupies the visual field appears.
But beneath the canvas in which a web of delusions resides, grows the perception of an interior self. The memory of oneself requires some distance from the everyday, so that contemplation and a conscious encounter with one's own essence might thrive, capable of making us experience the reconciliation between intangible and tangible, the visible and the invisible.
'The desire to fall with eyes wide open' aims to find the image of the naked present, the meeting point between two complementary realities.
In general, what inspires your work?
I look for inspiration for my work in literature, in poetry, in nature, in philosophy, on the eyes of my dogs, in music, in cinema and my own experiences.
