Claudina is a Portuguese photographer who enjoys portraying her daily life inspired mostly by cinematography. In her images we can see her quest for beauty, capturing those special moments in life that we all treasure and want to preserve. With a romantic and minimal style, her images remind us that beauty is everywhere if we know how to find it, and that life is about those little moments that make us who we are.
am - First of all thank you very much for your contribution to our project. Can you please introduce yourself for us?
CD - My name is Claudina and I'm based in Lisbon, Portugal. I studied a Bachelor in Literature and now I'm doing my master studies in Information Sciences. I am also an intern in a non-profit organisation dedicated to art!
am - How did you start in photography?
CD - When I was 10 years old I had for Christmas a digital camera and I was so happy and excited that I became the photographer of my family holidays. Later, when I was a teenager during high school, I started to save money to buy a big digital camera. With this I started to explore the different functions, techniques and I also started to learn how to edit pictures. When I moved to Lisbon to do my bachelor in Literature, I became a bohemian. I was attending lectures during the day and going to bars at night. I was always surrounded by people who talked about poetry and I needed to save these moments. So this time of my life took me to analog photography, first with disposable cameras and then with my first point and shoot camera. Lots of nights and faces filled up my first rolls. One day I woke up with my heart broken into pieces (not just metaphorically) and it led me to spend more and more time alone and to enjoy more and more the daylight. With the natural light of sunny Lisbon, the photography that I was doing drastically changed into what it is since I created my Instagram account in September 2017. Also, this time of my life led me to think in a theoretical concept to define what I am doing: I do photography to represent life and life is so rich in beauty!
am - What inspires your work?
CD - My work is mostly inspired by the movies of the Nouvelle Vague.
am - Who are your favourite photographers / artists?
CD - My favorite artists are movie directors: Jean-Luc Godard, François Truffaut, Agnès Varda, Éric Rohmer, etc. Also, there are a lot of «common people» that I admire.
am - What is your favourite movie?
CD - I would say it is «La Mama et la putain» directed by Jean Eustache. But this movie contributed more to my growth as a woman than to my photography.
am - What is your favourite photo book?
CD - The last one I bought was «Encounters with Peggy Guggenheim» and it is inspiring! Also, I love all the photo books with the work of Vivian Maier, her self-portraits are amazing!
am - Thank you very much for your time and your contribution to analog magazine.
