Jun 13, 2016

Elena is an Italian scientist and photographer currently based in Rome. Her raw and frank images are provocative, sensual and fun at the same time, revealing in a way the true human nature and celebrating freedom.

Following we want to present an interview we had with Elena:

am - First of all thank you very much for your contribution to our project. Could you introduce yourself for us please?

EA- Originally I’m from Sardinia but I’ve been living in Rome for nearly 10 years when I came to study at the university. I graduated in Pharmacy and now I’m finishing my Ph.D in Medicinal Chemistry. Are you surprised, ah!?

am - How did you start in photography?

EA - Out of boredom when I was really young. Now it’s a pastime I can’t do without.

am - What inspires your work?

EA - This is something that I find a little hard to explain. I think my inspiration comes from the same people that I decide to photograph, in fact I often have ideas for a new project or a new series after having known them.

am - Who are your favourite photographers / artists?

EA - Lately I’m hooked on William Eggleston.

am - How would you describe your photographs in 3 words?

EA- Rough , simple, carefree.

am - What are 5 things you could absolutely not live without?

EA - My camera, the cell phone and the phone charger, a pair of sunglasses and the umbrella.

am - If you could travel and stay in a place for one year, where would you choose to go?

EA - I think in Japan because their traditional culture has always fascinated me and I’m curious about their contemporary oddities.

am - Favourite songs / bands at the moment?

EA - Lately I’m into Britpop like I was at sixteen (I guess because I feel a little old…..)

am - What’s your favourite movie?

EA - I think it’s “Life aquatic” because it is an homage to Jacques Cousteau (when I was a child I loved his documentaries), there’s adventure, there’s the sea and there’s Bill Murray.

am - What are you reading at the moment?

EA - “Diary of a body” by Daniel Pennac.

am - Gin, vodka or tequila?

EA - I drink all of them but Gin&tonic is my all time favorite.

am - Your main unanswered question in life?

EA - Why am I not tall? Just 10 cm more would have been enough.

am - Do you have any project in mind that could be a personal or professional challenge?

EA - Lately I’ve been thinking about portraying unknown persons I meet and capture my attention for some reason. Nothing new, but I’d like to give it a try.

am - Thank you very much for your time and your contribution to analog magazine.
