First of all thank you very much for your contribution to our project. Can you please introduce yourself for us?

Hola, my name is Mile Modic. I am a photographer and graphic designer from Split, Croatia. In 1998 I finished the School of Fine Art as a photographer and later next year started my education at Art Academy as a graphic and photo designer. In the last 20 years, I worked for multiple international clients such as Estee Lauder, Sean John, Will Smith, Universal Records, Sony, T-Mobile, Pepsi, Sofitel, NBA, Nokia, and many more. In 2017 I opened a new studio with my wife called ‘ForGas’ that focuses on slow analogue processes of photography and graphic art. We opened our first gallery in Split in 2018. ‘ForGas’ is now my main focus and hopefully it will stay that way :).

How did you start in photography?

I started with photography in high school and it was love at first sight.

What inspires your work in general?

My main inspiration for work is that I can live from something I love to do and at the same time support my family. I never worked as a classic photographer, shooting events, food and weddings. I was always impressed by old-school photographers. Shooting without lights and setups. Just trying to capture romantic moments in everyday life.

Why do you work mainly with B&W?

“If you photograph people in black and white you photograph their souls, but if you photograph them in colour you photograph their clothes.” Ted Grant.

This quote from Ted Grant describes exactly how I feel about it. I love colour photography and there are some really awesome photographers out there doing miracles with it, but every time I pick up a camera I always choose BW because it feels like you have a time machine in your hands and now in this high-speed digital era, it actually gives you more time.

Who are your favourite photographers / artists?

I love Bill Brandt, Jan Saudek, Henry Gilpin, Edward Weston, Dorothea Lange and many more.

What is your favourite photo book?

I still haven’t bought my favourite photo book because in the end, I spend all my money on film and paper :)

Thank you very much for your time and contribution to analog magazine.
