Wang Yuanling is a young talented photographer from Chongqing, China. In his series “Habitats”, Yuanling exquisitely portraits the rural life and majestic landscapes of Western China. With a simple and elegant aesthetics, Yuanling shows us a nostalgic vision of the rural China that currently faces rapid and gigantic changes, a longing for a more simple and respectful life. Following we want to present the interview we had with the artist: am - First of all thank you very much for your contribution to our project. Can you please introduce yourself for us? WY - My name is Wang Yuanling, a Chinese guy born (1980) and based in Chongqing, a city in the southwest of China. It is a very interesting place as it is the largest city with 30 millions of inhabitants living here, a typical Chinese city with a very high growth rate. I am a freelance photographer who do my own work, but sometimes I also do some assignments for other media companies and work as a curator for some photographic exhibitions. In short my job is always photography related. am - How did you start in photography? WY - When I finished school in 2005 and until 2011, I joined a local newspaper to be a photojournalist, since then I work for myself. am - What inspires your work? WY - Curiosity, China is too big and it has been changing everyday. am - What is “Habitats” about? WY - It is a series of works on western China, but it is still in progress. The western region is still wild and poor. Although there are many big cities, such as Chongqing and Chengdu, compared with the eastern part of China, it is still very backward. There is no sea outlet, it is closed and vast, but here are deposited some valuable things of the Chinese culture, so in this series I shoot the wilderness, villages, small towns and all things that have no relationship with cities and its citizens. am - Who are your favourite photographers / artists? WY - I like all photographers or artists who are using color film to do their work. am - How would you describe your photographs in 3 words? WY - China, color, temperature. am - If you could travel and stay in a place for one year, where would you choose to go? WY - If traveling I would go to more wild places, if staying I’d choose a place with lots of art galleries and museums. am - Thank you very much for your time and your contribution to analog magazine.
